Robert H. King is a Visually Impaired Photographer and Digital Artist living in the outskirts of Glasgow, Scotland. Robert was born with sight issues and those issues have increased (worsened) over the years. One eye has just light detection whilst the other has Aphakia (no lens). This eye has around 40% vision due to having surgery on a detached retina leaving internal cryo and tri-macular scars. Robert has a high sensitivity to light and permanent double vision of light and shadows.

Robert’s background is in the independent music industry, Robert ran a cassette label and a record label in the 80s / 90s. For over 20 years Robert was also a freelance Graphic Designer working with photography galleries, arts organisations, record labels, magazines and artists. Robert has run mobile photography workshops: past events have included Flower Photography, Creative Post Processing, A Mindful Approach To Photography, Creative Landscapes and Creative Self Portraiture.

Robert creates all their work on mobile devices, namely an iPhone and iPad Pro. To date, Robert has had two solo exhibitions and has been a part of 14 group shows. In 2014/15 their exhibition ‘Seeing The Unseen’ was the first of its kind in Scotland to consist of work created entirely on mobile devices. This is in addition to being a winner in the Mobile Digital Art and Creativity Summit in Palo Alto and the Mobiography Magazine awards. In 2021 Robert was featured in ‘Blind Ambition’ a BBC Arts documentary about blindness and creativity. There are many strands to their work but they would describe it ultimately as Layered Storytelling. Robert creates a story and the viewer will then have their own perception of where that story is headed.

The need for self-expression and with it the need to convey the ideas and imagery that fill Robert’s mind on a daily basis and the need to be doing something creative is a constant in Robert’s life, it can bring meaning and direction.
